Aren't they all like this, though? To get into these high-minded positions, aren't they all a little too greedy, a little too haughty, and a whole bunch more convinced of their own invulnerability?
It seems that the more sanctimonious they are, generally the more hypocritical they are. There's a long tradition: Spitzer's invectives against corruption, Mark Foley's drive against child pornography, Larry Craig's anti-gay votes, etc.
I don't blame these guys for their peccadilloes (as long as it is legal), it bugs the shit out of me when they profess one moral position while they actually prefer to assume the position.
Seeing the pattern, it all looks just so ... Shakespearean. The human dilemma of irony and hypocrisy. It all seems tragic in an unavoidable way. The condition we all suffer from. We rail the most against the thing that we find the most tempting.
